Sealants:
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves (called pits and fissures) of teeth. More than 75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Teeth with these conditions are hard to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface. Sealants can protect teeth from decay for many years, but need to be checked for wear and chipping at regular dental visits.
Doctor Exam:
Dr. Zarrella will identify your child's risk for oral health problems including cavities, malocclusion and oral habits, gum disease, altered eruption sequence, injury, and bite disease. Children are usually seen at age two when the care for their oral health is transferred from the pediatrician to the dentist. Children need a dental home. This is where Dr. Zarrella has the opportunity to implement preventive health practices to reduce the child's risk of oral disease and pain.
Fluoride:
Dental Caries is still the most prevalent chronic disease in children. Children from low income families and from minority groups are five times more likely to experience tooth decay and other oral problems due to drastic decrease in visits to the dentist.
Now we have the Massachusetts Dental Society's Give Kids a Smile and C.A.R.E Program, which Dr. Zarrella is a memeber. He also serves on other local volunteer groups such as the Metro West Free Medical/Dental Program offering free dental care to low income families. Regular visits to the dentist and proper fluoride intake are the two main ingredients for good oral health. Dr. Zarrella will make sure your child gets the proper level of fluoride your child needs to prevent cavities.
